Scientific research creates generalizable knowledge using accepted scientific methods. Generalizable means that the new knowledge can be used to understand and solve new problems, not just the ones that were studied. There are several types of scientific research, but most fall into two categories, basic research and applied research. What is plasma physics and why do I need to know? The understanding and use of plasmas is entering a Golden Age. Profound new insights into the behavior of solar and stellar phenomenon, exciting advances in fusion energy research and development, and the technological applications of plasmas will play an increasing role in 21st century science and research.   DOE/Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. (, May 10). New model of plasma stability could help researchers predict and avoid disruptions. ScienceDaily. Retrieved April 3, .

This book discusses the field's potential contributions to society and recommends actions that would optimize those contributions. It includes an assessment of the field's scientific and technological status, as well as a discussion of broad themes such as fundamental plasma experiments, theoretical and computational plasma research, and plasma. About Theory Department The fusion energy sciences mission of the Theory Department at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is to help provide the scientific foundations for establishing magnetic confinement as an attractive, technically feasible energy option. The Department generates the theoretical physics knowledge required for realistic extrapolation of present experimental.

SPACE PLASMAS Space plasma physics is concerned with the observation and understanding of naturally occurring solar-system plasmas. It is an evolutionary field, and progress has been achieved incrementally.

The space plasma medium extends from the ionosphere of Earth to the far reaches of the solar system and encompasses plasmas of many types. The system was designed by the plasma research community with flexibility to utilize different diagnostics and to allow for comparison of results across different platforms.

Figure 1. Schematic of the GEC Cell and various diagnostics, including mass spectrometer capable of mass and energy-selecting ions that pass through an orifice on the. Diverse plasmas have been observed in the magnetospheres of Earth and other planets, and in interplanetary space.

Recently, measurements were made by a space probe at Comet Giacobini–Zinner. In these various plasma regimes investigated during the space era, plasma characteristics vary widely: particle densities range from Cited by: PROGRESS IN SCIENTIFIC AND MEDICAL RESEARCH 45 YEARS OF DISCOVERY PROGRESS REPORT A w a r e n e s s.

Plasma is the most common state of known matter in the universe. Our experimenters have seven labs on campus, and instruments on spacecraft, rockets, and the International Space Station. Our research includes experiment, theory, and simulation. Areas include basic science, astronomy, geophysics, and processing plasmas.

The U.S. Department of Energy's Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is dedicated to developing fusion as a clean and abundant source of energy and to advancing the frontiers of plasma science.

The Laboratory pursues these goals through experiments and computer simulations of the behavior of plasma, the hot electrically charged gas that fuels.
